A GUIDE TO THE EVIDENCE PUBLISHED BY TREEGENS
Treegens records mangrove planting with field videos and GPS coordinates. Its AI counts seedlings in the footage, and DAO verifiers review submitted plantings. These are separate stages: a filmed plot or an AI count does not, by itself, establish that DAO verification is complete.
This guide explains the evidence you can inspect on the Treegens homepage and live planting globe, using Plot 01 on the Dar es Salaam coast in Tanzania.
What happens between planting and verification?
- Plant and film. Planters use the Treegens app to record field footage with GPS coordinates.
- Count the seedlings. The AI detects seedlings, assigns tracking IDs and follows them across frames. The published count aims to count each tracked seedling once, rather than adding every appearance in the video.
- Review the planting. DAO verifiers review the submitted evidence. Check the plot's published review status separately from its AI count.
- Follow the updates. Use the globe and later field records to follow a planting. An initial seedling count and evidence of later survival answer different questions.
Plot 01: inspect the same ground before and after planting
The homepage identifies this example as Plot 01, Dar es Salaam coast, Tanzania, with the date 23 July 2026 and coordinates −6.882712, 39.465382. The clips below are the same files linked from the homepage.
The published example reports 413 tracked seedlings. Adding detections separately in every frame would produce 37,616 detections. That larger figure includes repeated appearances of seedlings; it is not a count of 37,616 planted trees. You can also inspect the original count file linked by Treegens.
What do the status labels mean?
- App-logged: a planting has been recorded in the field app. The homepage says its live total can include plots awaiting verifier review.
- AI-counted: the footage has a seedling count produced by the AI. This describes the counting stage.
- DAO-verified: the planting has a published verifier status. Look for that status on the individual plot rather than inferring it from a site-wide total.
The homepage's Plot 01 evidence panel says its DAO-verified label has not been published there. Treat the example on this page as filmed, AI-counted evidence; check the live globe for the current status of individual plantings.
What the published evidence can and cannot tell you
The footage lets you inspect the planting and the AI's displayed count. The coordinates identify the recorded location. These records make the example more inspectable, but an initial planting video does not establish long-term survival or a measured quantity of carbon removed.
Treegens states 97.5% AI tree-counting accuracy on its homepage and labels it as its own claim. The homepage does not link an independent accuracy paper. This guide does not independently validate that figure or present it as a guarantee for every plot.
A fuller assessment would include the counting method and evaluation sample, the verifier's dated decision, and repeat monitoring of the same plot. When reviewing a planting, check which of those records are available and which are still pending.
